Transmission - Rebuild Existing or Remanufactured. Jegs, Frasers, Something Else?
TYIA for your attention and info. I have a 2004 GMC 1500 SLT with original 4l60e and ~190k miles. A few weeks ago, wife was driving on highway and TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT warning came on dash. She pulled over and took surface streets and did not notice warning again.
I drove it the next day and witnessed over-revving in 1st and unable to find 2nd. It will shift from 1st to 3rd if you baby the throttle ~3k rpm. It does not seem to shift into 4th from 3rd.
So, it seems my 2-4 band is done.
I was quoted ~3k usd by a local transmission shop to rebuild the existing unit. However, I also see that I can buy a reman unit and that would cost about the same, with labor, as having the trans shop rebuild existing.
I have no experience buying a remanufactured unit. I'm looking at Fraser which has a 5yr warranty and unit rebuilt with upgraded parts. That seems really attractive.
Now my questions are:
- If it were you, would you go rebuild or reman? Why?
- Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with Fraser? Please elaborate.
- Do you have any alternative suggestions, either a different reman (Jegs, etc.) or somethin else entirely I'm not thinking of?
