Looking for some insight
Hey everyone! I switched social media recently, found Reddit recently and found this page. I am from an anonymous donor and decided to use one for our child. Little backstory- my dad had cancer and it was the 80s so they used a donor. I have no information at all on who the donor was. I’m healthy and have gotten things like early mammograms and colonoscopies, talked to doctors about not knowing half my genetics and they said to just get regular blood work and early tests like I mentioned. None seemed concerned and said it’s not the end all be all to health.
Before having our kid (two moms) I talked to doctors (primary care, friend that are doctors, and fertility clinic) about my side and did a full genetic screening. We chose a donor through a bank who had good family history for health, a full genetic screening, lifetime pictures, interviews etc just no name. I thought that knowing medical history (obviously I know this can all be faked the fertility industry is horrible) and being from a donor myself that this would be okay.
So now I found this page and the overwhelming consensus is that an unknown donor is unethical so I am wondering what’s ahead for me. If my child has a different reaction than I did and wants to know about biological relatives, does anyone have some good references for that, that maybe I haven’t come across on google or via books. Anyway I feel naive and nervous after feeling pretty confident about this decision a few years ago. I’m not looking for reassurance just some support in what could happen if my kid wants to find relatives or hates us for doing this. Thanks everyone for reading
