#7 Leslie Jones vs. #10 Jane Curtin
I know some people have mixed feelings about Leslie, and through no fault of her own, she became an unwitting target for right-wing douchebags to pounce upon due to her outspokenness and take-no-prisoners approach to comedy. F--- them, and if you “hate” her, well, a crazy bitch with a shovel will be visiting you soon. Known primarily for her WU commentaries, she owned every second she was onscreen, and added some much-needed levity to the early years of the Jost/Che dynamic.
It was a thankless task to replace Chevy Chase at the WU desk, and most of her time was spent teamed with the brighter spotlights that were afforded Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. But, it is my opinion that the faux-seriousness of the fake news was near-perfected by Curtin, who usually was relegated to straight-woman roles in other sketches. To see her countermand in real time her doubters by ripping open her blouse and displaying her…uh…sex appeal was a moment that still is a hilarious and shocking reminder that she was the steady hand SNL needed during its first real period of tumult post-Chase.
