[Product Request] How do you decide on products?

I'm just starting out with a skincare, and I'm absolutely and completely lost. I just want to find basic cleanser and moisturizer for a combination skin, but there are SO MANY different cleansers and moisturizers and... How am I going to pick one without even knowing if it'll work on me or not?

How exactly am I supposed to decide to get a specific product? How do I find something that looks legitimate and can help me? Do I just pick a decent random one to see if it works for me, and then repeat until I find one that does the job? Is the only thing I can do is just try and then find out?. I just don't know how exactly I can decide on a specific one. I'm afraid that nothing is going to work

And while we're here... What are reliable cleansers and moisturizers you can recommend for a combined skin type?
