Crazy for first bike?
So my son who is 13 years old has a mountain bike goes out with his buddies and he's been asking me to get one so that we can take trips and ride together. I currently have a dirtbike I've spent time on skateboards, electric skateboards, etc. but almost no time on a mountain bike.
I started out down the path and found a great deal on a used 2024 Santa Cruz high tower for 2500 but the guy backed out. Of course now I wanted to Santa Cruz a lot of it just because Santa Cruz was my first skateboard.
Was open to Bronson or Hightower but beginning toward the Bronson, just from how it was described as a little bit more playful
With the sales right now on Santa Cruz it seemed very hard to even bother with a used bike, so my options essentially became.
In rough numbers, my options were a 2024R build for about 2600, an S build for about 3400 or 4.1 C GX AXS BIKE for 4100 (retail 7k).
I tend to like cool stuff and the difference in price isn't gonna have a huge impact on our life so I opted for the most expensive one.
This morning I woke up thinking am I crazy? This is my first mountain bike. Just buy the cheap one and add to it later if I need to, but at the same time when the sales are this big and you're getting 45% off, it seemed like a good time just to kind of go all in. I figured worst case if it doesn't get written enough, my son can take the components or I can just sell it.
From what I have read mountain bike pricing is weak right now so at some point, all these discounts on Santa Cruz might disappear.
I'll also add a few things I'm under no illusion that the bike will make me a great rider and truth be told my 13-year-old talks about what they ride locally and I think it's probably pretty tame so it's probably a good deal over biked but at the same time I'm completely open to taking trips with him to some of the local mountains, etc. He has an 22 occam h20 (got it used for 1300).
I guess my question is was the extra money well spent, to me it seemed like the wireless shifting, etc. would be fun for an older person like myself. I still have the opportunity to cancel if I wanted.
