Is there a mechanism to tell the IRS "I'm not filing a return this year"?
My daughter is 18. The past two years, she filed a tax return only to get her withholding money back from a part-time job she had at the time.
This year, she is not required to file a return and has no beneficial reason to do so.
Typically, most people who file returns continue to do so year after year, so this situation is kind of unique, but it cannot be THAT unique.
It would make sense to me that the IRS should have a formal way to tell them , "I am not required to file this year and I'm not going to." This would remove the ambiguity of a possible lost return vs. no return, and also prevent the vulnerability of someone filing a fraudulent return in your name. It would help both taxpayers and the IRS.
Does the IRS have any such form or official way to do this? I can't seem to find any info about this. I know you don't HAVE to do it, but I think it would be a good thing to do.
