ELI5 : Economists who can speak plain language, why is it important for the American government to maintain USD as the global currency?

We know USD is the global currency. Hypothetically, what can happen if other countries begin to sell off some (or much) of their foreign reserve holdings in USD? What are at the pros and cons to the American people?
