Book recommendation: ‘Is This Working’ - author interviews 100 people about their UK jobs
Is This Working by Charlie Colenutt. Essentially this author spent 2 years interviewing people (anonymously) about their UKjobs to find out what they really like, good/bad and otherwise. I picked up the audiobook and each chapter has around 10 min on each person/job and I've found it genuinely fascinating, I suppose since I really only know about my own job. Highlights include:
Chef. Says the reason restaurants/culinary places don't have HR is because so many employees are using drugs/alcohol to cope with the long hours.
Warehouse worker. As expected the ecommerce retailers are a dystopian nightmare, you have to stand in one spot for hours moving boxes with no human interaction. Every 90 min you get to choose between a 45 second brain exercise (puzzle on screen) or physical exercise where you do some star jumps. He says the smaller warehouses are much more fun as they leave you alone and can interact with colleagues but also more dangerous, he has witnessed multiple near death forklift accidents.
Nightclub bouncer. Admits many of his colleagues are overly aggressive with an attitude problem but the reason he isn't is because he was bullied at school and wants to be nice to people.
Lots of people who really like their job too, also often they didn't land in the job by conventional means, i.e. just offered to help out when someone else was sick.
Was also interesting hearing about my own job which was mostly correct. Anyway, I thought I would share.
