Suggestions on way to smooth concrete path/patio

I have rough to the feet concrete slabs running around my house as photoed. I'm going to clean them, but I wondered if there was any way of smoothing the path so it has a nicer feeling. It's next to a polished sandstone patio. In the long term I'm hoping to remove the concrete slabs and lay more patio, but I need to save for that. The slabs are right next to the house, so I wouldn't be able to do that myself. Can I skim or grind them or is a mat the only sane option? They are at my back door so I was hoping just to make it a bit nicer.
