Happy International Women’s Day to ExMuslim girlies 🌹
Muslim women go through an insane amount of shit, ever since birth. We’re told to hide ourselves because our bodies cause men to be sinful, to abandon our dreams, to obey our husbands, that our testimonies are worth half of a man’s, that we can’t be leaders, that we are the majority gender in hell.
We can’t get married without going through the channel of our wali, we have no autonomy to get married on our own terms. Men can divorce us just by saying “talaq” but a woman has to apply through the court and get their approval for divorce. We live in constant fear that our husband may one day get a second, third, or fourth wife.
If you’re a woman then Islam really fucks up your sense of self-worth and confidence because we are conditioned to believe that men are better. Until recently you couldn’t even do hajj/umrah without a mahram.
I’ve seen so many women’s lives ruined because of Islam.
My friend who reluctantly abandoned her ambitions of being a singer/dancer because it’s “haram” for a woman to do so.
My cousin who couldn’t attend the funeral of her own husband because she had to be in her iddah period. She couldn’t get to say goodbye to him before they lowered him into the grave.
My grandaunt whose husband tend to her physical, emotional, or financial needs at all and acts like his second wife is his only wife. He refuses to divorce her.
Myself, shamed by my own female friends for taking off the hijab. Whereas if I was a man the absence of a hijab wouldn’t be a visual reminder that I am a “bad person”.
Conservatives are scared of intelligent women who think critically because they usually stop believing in religion. If you’re an exMuslim woman like me, be proud of yourself for breaking free of these shackles!
