Is it fine to stain on a new smooth spruce plank without sanding?

Hi, If the spruce planks are already made smooth, should i still sand them before staining or can i skip this step? Im afraid ill make circles from the sanding that will be visible when staining the wood in the dark color. ( im not so good at sanding apparently)
