Gf (23F) recently broke up with me (23M) but i want to get back together
Sorry about grammar i ws rush typing Im realizing after tht this is rlly long srry guys
I (23M) have been dating my gf (23f) for almost two years. Let me start off by saying that she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She is the kindest prettiest person ive ever met my one and only. I truly think that she would be the one and no one else ive ever met even comes close to her. I cant say for certain the same for her but i knew that i mattered. She would tell me how i am the reason she was able to go through tough times. We regularly talk about future goals together like marriage plans, names for kids, even about starting a cafe together after retiring. Its a pretty long story so i hope i can be concise enough for people to get the point.
Let me start by saying that i know i wasnt perfect but i thought that we had a pretty health good relationship, and i know those around me thought so too. We did everything together cooked watched movies went on picnics all that good stuff. Yes we had couple moments when we had things we were upset about but it was never anything major and we talked it out. A bit of context. I had already graduated college and now taking a gap yr to prep for med school. My gf graduated recently and as an international student whos visa was expiring was forced to go bakc to home country late december. ( we are both korean but i have US citizenship)
That was the start of our long distance (we werent new to it we had long family vacations away from each other. During this long distance period she brought up how I dont initiate communication enough how if she reduces the effort of talking then it just both goes down. ( this is a bad habit of mine i always had i was never a big fan of phone calls in general) and i recognized that i was a problem and from then on i tried to call every morning and night and still text in between. (Due to time zone difference we basically have days and nights swapped so morning and evenings are the only times to really communicate). I know that this wasnt the "best" solution but it was my attempt at working at it and from then on i really thought that we were having a good relationship long distance.
One evening, we were calling and it was like any other day, we talked about our day and laughed. I wasnt giving my full undivided attention as i was also going out to grocery shop as my roommate and i were having guests over for dinner. I noticed that so when there was a good time to excuse myself from the group for a bit i called again. In that call she hit me with the i think we should part. She talked about how our original plan was to come back to the states in fall to do masters and we will try to be at least close to each other if not same school. But due to her major and future career goals shes requierd to stay and do masters in korea. Meanwhile i have no option but to stay in states for medschool. Tbh this was such a bad excuse and she admitted to it too. After the things we been through together something like that is nothing. Id be more than willing to move to korea and she knows that. But this part rlly didnt matter. The rest of the call though due to being so dumbfounded of the situation and crying (yes i am a very emotional man who cries... a lot) i really couldnt get comprehend what was going on and resorted to begging her to rethink it and talk it out because i am more than willing to change for her.
But the craziest part of that night was that she was surprised by my reaction. She thought that i would just say okay lets break up. Its crazy that she would think thats how i value her and our relationship
(Im realizing that this is taking way too long and ill try to make it shorter. Basically we had an unproductive call again three days later and another call the week after and this is what came out of it)
Lets just say that neither of us are the best at expressing our emotions. For me, im not the best at expressing my happy emotions for her. Her existence on its own is making me happy and is doing so everyday but because it is everyday that doesnt always get expressed towards her especially during long distance. On her end she doesnt express bad emotions and keeps it in a bubble until it pops and its too late which is basically what happened here. Points we talked about: She was having a really hard time during long distance she felt like she was not receiving enough love that she needed. She knows that i was trying to put in more effort but it still wasnt enough. From my perspective, yes i was putting in some effort but i knew i should be doing more and thats on me but i thought that at most she was at like a 30% but she already hit the 100% and popped. I didnt realize that she was feeling this way because on terms of her actually talking about it recently it went straight zero to hundred. Like i said earlier we literally had a normal conversation not two hours before this all started. She said that sometimes it felt like i didnt care enough for example jealousy/clinginess. She felt like i didnt have enough but from my perspective she was the perfect person that as long as its not like meeting up with a guy one on one im fine with it because i trust her. She felt like whenever i missed a call it felt like i was forgetting about her. Which made me feel terrible about myself but there are times that i come back from work tired and knock out before i even take my phone out my pocket. I know this is still on me and it shouldnt be that hard to just send a quick text at least but still. It was basically a bunch of things like this but ending is that she didnt have the courage to keep trying and doenst want to be hurt by it anymore. It wasnt really a discussion it was more of a heres what i felt so im breaking up. I definitely tried, but she didnt give me any room to try to set things right.
We also talked about post break up stuff like how we would want to still be friends not now but when we're ready we still care about each other maybe if i visit korea we can have dinner stuff like that.
It has now been a little less than a month since the whole situation started and about a week and half since i last talked to her. Lif is not life right now i am empty crying regularly but ok past that. Im not looking for pity..i think
Yesterday my roommate and his girlfriend were arguing and was asking me to mediate cuz neither were really understanding what either person was trying to get across. A lot of what is emotionally/logically correct, what is within reason vs what is the right answer, what is the right mindset to have. Having tht conversation with them was kind of eye opening and i couldnt help think that if this is how i had discussed with my gf things couldve ended differently. Not just about me and her but just myself as an individual as well. I would make fun of my roommate for being dumb when the right answer is right there in front of him when in reality i just felt like i was talking about myself and what i should have been doing. I was the one that was dumb and didnt see the solutions until it was too late. But its something i never wouldve been able to think of on my own without the back and forth from the other pov. As two very emotional people it wouldve been hard for my gf and i to have conversation like that but i feel like if we had a conversation even somewhat close to that we could have a different outcome even now.
Till the very end my gf kept on talking about how much she appreciated me and how im not at fault but clearly something went wrong for us to get to this point and its something that i would fight to fix and heal than just let go like this.
Im not looking for the 'feels bad man stay strong' comments i appreciate it but what im wanting to know is if its reasonable for me to try to get back together. If so, how do i go about doing it? When would be a good time for me to contact her again. Am i the insensitive one for trying to get back together when she already ended things. Does me talking like this make me the clingy desperate guy ex that nobody wants to hear from.
