When did people start calling all vehicles "cars?"

It seems that somewhere in the 2000's the term changed. Back in the 1990's I don't remember anyone calling a pickup or SUV a car. Cars were always sedans, hatchbacks and station wagons. But nowadays I'll go to meet someone I've never met before and they'll say something like "I'll be in a red car" and they will pull up in an SUV or pickup, but I'm looking for a sedan or hatchback. There was another post here on Reddit where someone was asking about whether a Ford F150 was a good car or not. What is a car? Now I'm not entirely sure anymore, it seems that all vehicles are cars nowadays.

Well, maybe not all vehicles. I drive heavy equipment and commercial trucks and so far no one has said that those are cars. But at the rate things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if I were told "could you jump in the white car with the 13 speed and bring me up 12 tons of gravel?"
