Best way to get into D&D by myself? Some bad experiences playing IRL.

5th Edition

Hey, ive played D&D in real life for a partial campaign with my irl friends. The problem is that, the vision that we have for the game is completely different. I really wanted to get into the RP portion of it, but sadly nobody really matched the vibe between me and the DM, it almost felt like a solo session.

Then the biggest issue i had with it, which is that they play it like an MMORPG. Getting the best weapons, making their classes as OP as possible instead of creating interesting rp and dialogue based characters. Making a barbarian class and instantly trying to kill NPCs because 'thats what barbs do' instead of engaging in RP. Whenever i would RP with the DM, the rest of the group would show disinterest and open their phone to watch tiktok or whatever, which made me want to end RP fast because it felt bothersome. Not to mention that some of the players peer pressured the (yes we are all rookies) DM into leveling us up because they wanted to get to the 'OP' stage ASAP because lower levels weren't fun to them.

Now i dont want to shit on the way they play d&d, everybody enjoys it in different ways and im aware they're absolutely valid for wanting to play it that way, i just stepped out and said i dont enjoy it like this personally.

Where is the best place to find likeminded people? I want to properly learn and play the game with a fun and dedicated group.
