AITA for expecting my boyfriend to split the rent after he “gave” me his spot?
I’m 20F and been with my boyfriend (27M) for almost two years. We’ve been living together for 14 months, and it’s been mostly great—until now.
So, we moved into his apartment a year ago. At the time, he was renting with a roommate, but they had a big fight, and his roommate moved out. He told me, “You can take their spot! I’ll just pay the full rent until we find someone new.” I was so grateful—he seemed like a total gentleman. But then… things got weird.
Fast forward to last month. The landlord raised the rent by $300, and my boyfriend suddenly said, “We need to find a new roommate ASAP. I can’t afford this alone.” I offered to start splitting the rent 50/50 since I was technically in his roommate’s spot. He got really defensive: “You don’t get it. I was being nice letting you live here. This isn’t your place.”
Wait, what? I thought we were a team! I’ve paid for groceries and utilities all along, but he’s been acting like the apartment is HIS castle. Last week, he even said, “Why do you care so much about money? Can’t you just trust me?” And now he’s threatening to break up if I keep “nagging” about splitting costs.
The kicker? He’s been using my money for his car payments and other stuff without asking. I’m not broke, but this feels like he’s treating me like a charity case. Am I wrong to want fairness, or is he gaslighting me into thinking I’m the “greedy” one?
