Toxic Workplace and Friendship – Need Advice

Hey everyone, I need some advice about a complicated situation involving my best friend and her restaurant.

I (28F) have known my best friend (37F) for almost 10 years. rl dr: We worked together at a restaurant where she was my manager. After she opened her own restaurant, I worked for her for 3-4 years. She’s married to her wife (32F), who has trust issues, especially since my friend stays in touch with her exes. This has caused tension in their relationship and spilled into the workplace.

At work, I’ve been handling multiple roles (cooking, cleaning, serving, etc.) and often work overtime, sometimes unpaid. My friend’s wife has become close with coworkers calling some her best friends and tells them everything wrong about my friend, creating a divide where people pick sides. I’ve remained neutral, but one coworker has taken issue with my bluntness, why because I was the sous-chef and was told to adres them when they are slacking off. My friend wants me to “play nice” to keep the peace so her wife doesn’t get upset that her new friend is in trouble, even though I’m not the one causing problems.

Recently, my friend’s marital issues have escalated, and her wife left for a week without communication. My friend couldn’t work, so I covered shifts, even on my days off, sometimes without pay. When I told her I’m pursuing my master’s degree and gave her notice, she refused to accept it, guilt-tripping me by saying I’m leaving her “high and dry.”

I’ve set boundaries and an incident accrued when I was told to arrive at 12 and when I did she was not there and messaged her what time will she be arriving she told me at 2-3 pm I said I won’t be waiting that long because I was told 12 and I live 1 hour away from home but she accused me of poor communication and being a “bad person” and that she is not home watch TV and getting things done and that I have a bad character and so on I just replied saying okay, because she’s the type to think that she is alway right and you are wrong. We haven’t spoken since and it’s been almost 1 year. Now, I’m invited to an event at her restaurant hosted by our social group. I don’t hold animosity toward her but feel awkward about the workplace drama and the coworkers.

How should I handle this situation? Would it be wise that I attend the event despite the tension, or skip it to avoid awkwardness? AITA for not attending?
