Macro vs microdata refinement

There are lots of theories and "clues" to support the work that the refiners are working on is tied to specific individuals. Helly or Gemma's numbers showing up in the case files for example. But if that's the case, wouldn't the department be called "microdata refinement"? Micro refers to the individual level while macro refers to larger systems. Just something l've been wondering about.
