Do Navy ship deployments qualify for military deferment counted toward PSLF?
I have an upcoming deployment on a naval vessel and am confused whether it qualifies for military deferment or not. The condition on the official form that may count is: “Reassigned to another duty station other than where the member is normally assigned.” This reads like someone’s way of defining deployment who forgot that the Navy deploys too and we stay on a ship the whole time.
The next question on the form states the military service is in connection with a contingency operation, a national emergency, or a war. At the bottom, form states “A contingency operation is a military operation that is designated by the Secretary of defense as an operation in which members of the Armed forces are or may become involved in military actions, operations, or hostilities against an enemy of the US or against an opposing military force.” I would argue that sailing on a warship in foreign waters counts, but I really don’t know.
I asked Mohela about this and have gotten different answers from different staff. One told me the whole deployment counts, the other told me only the part counts where I’m getting hostile fire or imminent danger pay.
Any experts here? My fear is I get placed on deferment and then later they tell me it doesn’t count.
