Old song is old: Trapping Wolf Spiders in 2025
Hello fellow Grounded players :)
I've been skimming through this reddit group for infos, but most of them were either +1 year old or even older or extremely inconsistent. So I decided to post yet another of these topics to hear experiences and tips of players that are still actively, or again like me, playing this to this day.
As seen above I play on Willow. I play SSP on Fluffy mode, because I like to take my time exploring and building and skittering around without being constantly on my toes. Last and first time I played Grounded it was in mid 2023 when I received a test month of the Xbox Game Pass. I played every day and also had a world on fluffy. I played faster following the story to possibly get through it before the months runs out leaving a lot of "secrets" unrevealed and not straying to far from the storyline. Alas - I didn't make it though. I did manage to make it up to the JavaMatic Event but never made it through it. So I basically never experienced the endings (even though I already spoiled myself to them skimming through the Wiki back then ^^). I could never afford the Game Pass but was gifted the Game on Christmas last year since it was on sale. I was occupied with other games up to a week or two ago, but now I'm fully into Grounded again and already noticed, some minor things that have changed throughout the yard from my last game.
Anyways, back to the Wolfies. So I basically only want to block the ones at the oak tree (there are 3 inside, at least for me, and the one sleeping outside behind the cobweb near the Lab entrance). I have built my main base on the lamp below the oak tree - mainly to avoid ants stealing my stuff, to be safe from most ground raids in the beginning and have an always respawning food source (the flies). In the last game I have built on the small clearing in the vicinity of Growel Gulch, the Larva Burrow and the Lemon Crime Punch-O carton and even used Pebblet Foundations to floor out the uneven ground and Scaffolding to elevate my base into the air and I blocked the Scaffolding with Palisades down into the floor on all sides, but Bugs kept either glitching or spawning inside the Scaffolding under my floor - even patrolling Wolfies, it was a pain. To avoid that I decided to chose a naturally high location and while googling for inspiration I stumbled upon the lamp and though "yeah I guess I try that".
So far so good. I'm almost 90 days into the Game and still only finished the Oak Lab and the Hedge Lab since I am so occupied with my base. I'm just not soeone to build small main bases and resize them while playing, because I am a hoarder and need space to store my chests in pretty early on without cluttering the base. Midway into building I had to tear it down because I noticed the Pebblet Foundations to be VERY uneven and stem floors could not be placed on them. So I had to re-arrange everything. By now I only had 2 raids. One Level 1 Larva Raid because I had built a little ground platform to place my pallets on and 1 Level 1 Orb Weaver Raid shortly after I returned from clearing the Hedge Lab, because the platform was still there. After the OW-Raid I teared the platform down and relocated it on the root behind the lamp. Ever since I had no other (ground) raids, but then again I haven't dealt with a lot of aggressive bugs due to always sleeping and due to being occupied farming weed stems or grass for base building.
So recently I started to build a walkway between the 3rd storey of by base building and the tree trunk, so I can go up the trunk to build a platform around it for my zipline network. Already while relocating the pallet platform to the root I noticed, that the wolfies inside the tree are pretty light sleepers waking up from construction noise and yes I did know they react to sounds. since the platform is very close to one of the entrances I was like "oh yeh okay fair enough". But when I started building the walkway up the tree, the Wolfies always growled an walked outside and climbed up the tree to see what was happening there. Yesterday I thought I might have started the project too low hence why they always hear it an wake up. Since I only wear Red Ant Armor for the hauling strength, I sort of don't want to deal with them for the time being. I want to tear down the walkway again and move it up at least one or two more storeys, so I finally have my peace building around the tree trunk.
However, tearing down what I have built so far will cause a huge ruckus and logically result in the Wolfies waking up spotting me sooner or later - especially because I have to pick up the stems and planks after I have teared it down. So I thought I might as well trap the Wolfies inside so they can wake up all they want, but I read, that they can get out when I stray too far from the tree due to walls and palisades not being rendered anymore. Also, walling them in will as well wake them and I will have to get very close to the dens to wall them in. Also, due to not venturing past the Hedge Lab, not sealing the Haze and not straying very far from my base, I don't have access to Burr Weeds, Mushroom Bricks or other, sturdier building materials. >!Also I am aware, that later, when I seal the Haze, an Infected Wolfie will roam the area 24/7 and can jump VERY far and high,!< so yeah having my main base there might seem a bit short sighted, but I do not plan to seal the Haze before I am not prepared enough to bear the consequences :D the Burr Weeds are the only reason to do so for me and I am fine waiting for them :3 I might move my main base elsewhere as soon as I have access to Burr materials and Mushroom Bricks, so I do NOT need advice like "move your base elsewhere".
So, are there any new insights on the topic recently (e.g. past the Fully Yoked update)?
