Song of the Day Redux, Day 1: Disciple's Anthem
Hey guys, I know I'm not u/smoomoo31, but I'd like to kick off some regular discussion anyway. We've already got an awesome database of songs of the day from the official catalog, but I think it would be great to see some detailed discussion for Shabutie, and Coheed b-sides, demos, covers, side-projects, and unusual performances.
Since we're also getting into the realms of obscurity, where no published lyrics exist, I'm going to make an effort to find them and post them here for convenience. I'll [bracket] alternate lyrical interpretations, and feel free to correct me if you think any of the lyrics are wrong. They probably will be. In the interest of brevity I won't type out repeated song sections multiple times, unless the lyrics change each time.
This is the first track on Shabutie's 1999 EP, Plan to Take Over the World. Maybe not the earliest Shabutie song, but the earliest studio recording to my knowledge. And how better to premiere your first EP with an anthem for future disciples of your band?
The Content: This was before the Coheed concept existed, so it doesn't make sense to have a "The Fiction" section. The song seems to be extremely personal, all about Claudio leaving Nikki, and forming Shabutie. Also, there's Claudio talking about being stiff and aroused, so there's that.
"Shabutie" is taken from a movie, "Naked Prey," taken from a tribal chant that means 'naked prey.' Go figure.
The Music: This was only Claudio, Mic, and Nate Kelley. A simpler time. I don't really care for the first minute of the song, because it's pretty dreary, but if you slog through the first minute, the song takes a sudden shift into more pleasant, familiar Coheed territory.
Mic's got some clear, prominent bass lines in here that remind me more of SSTB than anything after that (naturally.) The guitar work is also pretty simple for Claudio, but the vocals are as Claudio as ever.
The Part: The drums building up behind the "Farewell, Nikki" and the bass line right after that. Ohh man.
This round caught the boiling points
Severed hands, dismembered body parts
I'll face the answer when I corner age thirteen
Flowers to remember the dead
I'll taste you, sustain [to stain?] all of us to bury my hands
I'll scream from the top of the world
And hope you'll hear me
Leave me sour, leave me sour
Fulfilled, stiff, aroused
Farewell Nikki
Could have sworn you're beautiful
A beautiful girl
Whose smiles could cut me
Shabutie, Shabutie, Shabutie
Yeah, well I’m a disciple
