Writers Using a Pen Name—Pros, Cons, and Your Experience?
I’ve decided to write under a pen name (seen in my profile) and it took a lot of back and forth to make this decision. Ultimately, my reasoning came down to:
- I have a professional job in a field where I’m very public-facing. While I love writing horror and crime fiction (I have an educational background in criminology), I recognize that my colleagues may not share my enthusiasm for darker material.
- I work for a large, progressive organization and some of the themes I explore in my writing would be seen as controversial. Rather than risk professional fallout, I’d rather keep my fiction separate from my day job.
- Realistically, the odds of making more from writing than my current career are slim. So why jeopardize job security over this?
Of course, if my writing career ever takes off...I mean, that's the dream! But until then, I’d rather stay under the radar.
For those who write under a pen name what’s your experience?
I’d especially love to hear from agents, editors, or publishing professionals about the marketing pitfalls of using a pseudonym.
Thanks in advance!
