What was it like in the 2000s as a scene/emo kid?

I'm planning on writing about a group of people who are now in their 30s and used to be emo in the 2000s. What exactly was it like? I want to know about the technology, (what emoticons were used, abreviations like XD, websites, etc) the music (please be general, I'd like to know about bands every emo knew about) the fashion, and HOW YOU GOT OUT OF YOUR EMO PHASE. Although, I'm guessing not many people in this sub have gotten out of it, lol. Thanks!!
