Inward confusion and potential appropriation

Having a very hard time today.

For the past few years, a headmate has quietly identified as a certain character. Whether this is due to introjection or a kintype, I don't particularly know— but it's been well and good for ages.

But recently, I started "hearing"/sensing the OG character as if he were separate from the system, and phoning in to punish my headmate for identifying as him. Nonstop criticism. Some highlights include: "second-rate", "identity theft", "you've got a death wish", and most importantly to me, "this is appropriation". Given that this character comes from an anime-like media, I've always been hypervigilant about things like cultural differences, not taking what isn't mine to claim, and the potential violence that comes with an american wearing someone else's story. I've never outwardly gone by this character's name or even mentioned that I'm plural to begin with. It seems like this visitor is just upset that my headmate inwardly considers himself similar in the first place.

I don't know if this character is truly visiting me somehow to warn me about my transgressions, or if its a byproduct of my anxiety telling me to back off. It's heartwrenching for my headmate to divorce himself from his identity, but if it must be done, we understand.

Have a migraine since this all started. Full-body stress. Pulled a lot of awful yet relevant tarot cards. Asked for interpretations from other readers here on reddit and they've asked "is there a powerful man who's angry with you?"

Can't tell if this is really happening or not. Can't tell if Visitor OG Character is spiritually real, or simply a manifestation of my own concern over potentially overstepping cultural boundaries. Maybe Visitor OG Character is a dissociated part of me that wants to keep me in check. Maybe he's something else entirely, pretending to be him.

Headmate has been asked to hand over his entire identity and inner appearance and adjust to "looking ugly" (looking like my physical body). If that's what must be done, so be it... but I can't tell if I'm just having a mental breakdown or something.

Any thoughts? Sorry if this sounds like another whiny american "am I appropriating from anime" post. I really just don't know where the balance is. I don't expect answers from anyone and realize I'm not obligated to receiving any comfort here. Just wondering if someone with a little more clarity of mind might see something I'm not seeing here.
