If WP/SDP wins, we may actually have better social economic mobility
Many of the WP and SDP leaders and candidates come from humble backgrounds.
Low Thia Khiang was a kampong boy who is an example of one who went from rags to riches. Many years ago, Chiam See Tong was also another example of how one can endure hardship and become successful (his family lost their wealth during WW2). He was one of the few opposition who were pragmatic but in touch with the people. Similarly, many of the current and former WP MPs like Faisal Manap, Png Eng Huat, Gerald Giam and Louis Chua grew up as lower middle/middle class family members and have climbed the social ladder.
In fact, only He Ting Ru, Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh (grew up in HDB) came from more comfortable backgrounds and still they were only upper middle class where their parents were still salaried workers in higher paying professions. Even then Pritam took the initiative to donate half his salary and unlike the leaders, he actually lives in a HDB.
We need more people who can relate to the common man and the rising income inequality by prioritising the needs of the middle class.
