Is rehoming the best option?

Rehoming

My (26F) partner (23F) has had her cat for 4 years now. She adopted her during covid to ease her loneliness. She’s a social and energetic cat but has some behaviors that aren’t making it easy at home. She’s a strictly indoor cat and my girlfriend will not compromise on this, she has had issues with fleas coming into the house before and it’s a non-negotiable. Also, it’s just too risky to have our cat out there on the loose when there’s highways and busy roads nearby. She has a history of being relentlessly loud through all hours of the night and I can tell that it has taken a toll on my partner. She can’t get quality sleep and her body and mind is suffering because of it. It’s not just loud and endless meowing, she will slam her body against the door, forcing my girlfriend to open the door to let her in (she used to keep the door open but wanted to establish boundaries and that didn’t work) even after letting her in, her cat will still meow and scratch doors/the wall, knock stuff off tables, etc. to get attention. We even have had difficulty cooking because she will come into the kitchen, knock things off the counters and try to eat everything. I slept over at her house and her cat kept both of us up and I saw firsthand what she has to deal with at night. I was so exhausted. At certain points through the night, I was so scared because she had jumped on my face and scratched my lip. She has jumped on people and bit/scratched them before so it’s not just me. We can’t ever seem to pin point what she wants/needs because the only times that she’s not a lot of work is when she’s sleeping. She has tried so much to try to help improve her cat’s behavior but nothing has seemed to work. She’s so broken over this. I personally have had over 20 cats throughout my life (my dad was a hoarder) so I am not new to being around cats. I have met many cats across many breeds and personalities and I have to say that this one is entirely unique in both good and bad ways. I can tell that this is a really hard decision to make and she must feel a lot of guilt for considering this. I have never rehoused a cat before and don’t know how to proceed. I think we are leaning towards finding her a new home because we are aiming to move to NYC at the end of this year and don’t think that she will be happy in the big city with no where to roam, in a smaller apartment.

How can I help my partner go through this process and make things easier for her? Does it sound like there’s something else we could try that might help? Does rehoming sound like the best option? If so, what’s the best way to find someone who would be a good fit for her? I’ve heard bad things about FaceBook marketplace and Craigslist although I have had experience adopting through Craigslist myself and it was a pretty straightforward process. I just want to make sure she goes to a good, loving home where she’ll be happy.
