Do I have high expectations as a tenant?

So my husband and I have been renting a condo for almost two years. The landlord lives out of state, and up until now there haven’t been any major issues. My husband and I are relatively self sufficient, and treat this condo as if it is our own, since it is our home. My husband is in the residential maintenance industry, so any repairs that are needed, we contact the landlord, and get her approval to do the repair ourselves and deduct the supplies off of our rent. Even though it specifically stated landlord is responsible for snow removal, we shovel and purchase our own ice melt. We don’t mind doing all of this, and it’s our own choice.

Recently, the gas company has been digging up our driveway and backyard. We received no notice about this from the gas company, the town, or the condo association/landlord. One day we were asked to move our vehicles out of the driveway that is specifically stated in our lease and the next day we have a hole in the driveway and all of the grass in the backyard is completely dug up and holes are everywhere.

I take our dog for walks every morning, and have asked the demolition crew if they need us to move anything from our backyard. They said no. I came back from a walk yesterday morning and all of our stuff was piled up to the side, and some things were broken. My husband and I asked our landlord repeatedly over the past week if she could gal the town and the condo association to figure out what is going on. She said she didn’t get in touch with anyone but we should be the ones to call the town.

We responded that as we are the tenants and she is the property owner, we would like her to figure out how long this will take, and if the landscaper has plans to put down grass seed or sod, since the backyard is completely destroyed. She basically told us that it is not her problem. We asked for a concession on our rent for the upcoming month as we no longer have a convenient spot to park our vehicles, and no longer have an operable back yard. She told us this is not her fault and not her problem, then finally gave in and offered us 20% off of next month’s rent with the understanding that she will not be addressing this issue again.

It is that last line that sent me over the edge. In my mind we were just asking her to step up and be a landlord. Do I just have high expectations or has this whole situation been managed poorly by my landlord?
