AITA for damaging my mom’s side mirror even though I offered to pay for it?
Today I (18) was pulling out of our garage when I hit the cars side mirror against the side of the garage door and damaged the whole mirror. It’s still functional and it’s still working as it should but the shell and a few parts around the mirror are cracked and damaged. I know it is entirely my fault that I hit the side, I was trying not to hit the car in our driveway and overshot it and in turn damaged the mirror.
However, when my dad came out and saw what had happened he started berating me, calling me names and overall just being really horrible to me even after I told him I would pay for the damages and that he wouldn’t have to do anything.
I think it’s important to note that my parents have two separate cars, my dads car and my moms car, my moms was the one I was going to use to take my dogs out since hers is bigger and she’s also the only one who uses that car other than me.
I told my mom when it happened (she wasn’t home) and she’s entirely understanding and was more worried if I was okay or not, she told me we would go in and get it fixed sometime later this week and that she didn’t blame me whatsoever, mistakes happen especially when you’re new to driving (I’ve only been driving for about a year)
I do accept full responsibility for damaging the mirror which is why I’m going to pay to get it fixed but the way my dad is going on and on about how I’m a horrible person and how me apologizing in the future won’t mean anything if I hit another car next time, even though this is the first time I’ve ever done something like this.
My dad however is still pissed at me and won’t even look at me without swearing or telling me I shouldn’t drive ever again. He’s been nonstop telling me how much it’s going to cost (except he’s over exaggerating to scare me, a common occurrence I fear) and telling me I’m irresponsible and a horrible driver and he’s just making me feel more and more guilty about damaging my moms car than I already do and making me feel like more of an asshole again than I already do.
I’m not entirely sure if I’m posting on the right forum here but I just wanted an outside opinion on whether or not I’m the asshole in this situation. So AITA?
