Is this withholding correct?
Hello…wondering if this withholding is correct…
Annual: $146k; paid bi-weekly W4: married, use single rate. 0 dependents W2 gross wages: $5,339 ($139k) Federal withholding: $941 (17.6%)
The math suggests the effective tax rate could be 14.1% (standard deduction single), 16.6% (standard married deduction) or 19.1% (no deduction) so I’m having trouble squaring 17.6%. A recent bonus (not part of my base salary) was taxed at 24% and that’s what I expected.
Is the math not mathing because it isn’t or because I’m wrong? Hesitant to ask HR because that’s an offshore help desk that’s not very helpful so I’m starting here on the hope that I am off in my math.
The actual tax bill isn’t my concern here…I’m trying to assess whether or not what I’m starting from (paycheck withholdings) is a potential problem.
Thank you.
