Review my power system
I’m currently developing a power system for a story I’m writing. I’ve always been drawn to detailed, well-structured power systems that feel natural within their worlds, with clear rules that branch into more complex mechanics. With that in mind, I set out to create my own, ensuring that it ties seamlessly into my story’s origins and themes.
However, as I was reviewing it, I started to notice some similarities to Nen from Hunter x Hunter, a power system I greatly admire for its depth and flexibility. While I want my system to stand on its own, I worry that I may have subconsciously borrowed too much from it.
If you're familiar with Hunter x Hunter, could you review the basic structure of my power system and let me know if it feels distinct enough? And if not, what aspects I could refine to make it more unique? If you haven't read the series, I’d still love to hear your thoughts on the system itself, whether it’s engaging, balanced, and on the right track.
This is just a foundational overview, I still need to flesh out the details, refine the mechanics, and introduce more unique concepts. But before I go too deep, I want to make sure I’m heading in the right direction.
(Btw, this description is from the point of view of a narrative book)
Riso System:
Riso is a boundless energy derived from one's innermost soul—its reflections, passions, and desires. It is a complex yet highly structured power system that has been extensively studied, with numerous classifications and rules. The following is the most up-to-date understanding of Riso.
The Nature of Riso
At its core, Riso is a dormant energy present within all living beings. It is the underlying force behind evolution, growth, and change. However, while most creatures remain unaware of it, humans have developed the ability to awaken and shape this energy in ways no other species can.
To awaken Riso, one must go through one of these moments:
- Achieving mastery in a passion or skill.
- A desire so deep and genuine that it resonates through one's very being.
- Exposure to massive amounts of external Riso energy.
- Being affected by a Riso-based ability designed to awaken it in others.
- Inheriting an awakened Riso.
- Consuming the Fruit of the Blind Prince (now impossible).
Once awakened, a person begins generating an infinite flow of Riso. However, because the human body is finite, this energy must be bound and controlled through specific restrictions to prevent overload.
Restrictions:
To harness Riso effectively, users impose restrictions that refine and channel their energy. These restrictions follow the principle of equivalent exchange—the greater the restriction, the more powerful the resulting output. There are three primary types of restrictions:
1. Catalyst Restrictions
This is the foundational restriction necessary for most people to access Riso. It acts as a medium, binding the user’s infinite energy to a tangible or conceptual anchor. A catalyst can be:
- A specific mindset (e.g., only activating Riso when enraged or completely calm).
- A physical object (e.g., a sword, gloves, or a book).
- A specific phrase, action, or ritual.
Since a person's soul determines their catalyst restriction, it cannot be chosen arbitrarily. Instead, the subconscious naturally imposes it during the early stages of Riso development. However, experienced users may later shape or alter their restrictions.
2. Basic Restrictions
While not required, these restrictions significantly enhance specific abilities. Unlike catalyst restrictions, which bind one's overall Riso, basic restrictions apply to individual techniques. By imposing precise conditions (such as only using a technique at close range, or only against a certain type of enemy), users can dramatically increase an ability’s efficiency and potency.
3. The Naming System
Names are deeply tied to the human soul, and within the Riso system, they serve as a mechanism for power amplification.
- Basic Applications: These are foundational techniques shared by all Riso users. Over time, their names have been ingrained into the energy system itself. Speaking their names aloud enhances their effects.
- Personalized Techniques: Unique abilities shaped by an individual’s soul. Naming them strengthens their power, and the more descriptive the name (so that an opponent immediately understands it or can easily recall it), the greater the amplification.
- The Double-Down Principle: If a user truthfully explains their ability to someone, they receive a short-term boost in overall Riso output and effectiveness. This serves as a form of risk-reward—giving away information strengthens the user at the moment but may also leave them vulnerable.
- However, deception has limits—a user cannot lie about their ability or intentionally make explanations convoluted. If their soul does not genuinely intend to share information, the boost will not manifest.
The Power of Riso
Riso is a connective and conversion-based energy, linking an individual’s dreams, desires, and potential to reality by transforming them into actual, physical energy.
Applications of Riso
Riso abilities are categorized into two main levels:
-
Basic Applications – Fundamental techniques that rely on the natural flow of Riso. Any awakened user can learn these.
-
Advanced Applications – More refined, specialized techniques derived from the four basic applications. These require greater skill and control.
Within these categories, there are seven primary forms of Riso applications, each defining how Riso interacts with the user and their surroundings.
1. Basic Applications
The four core applications form the foundation of all Riso techniques:
- Amplification – Enhancing bodily attributes by channelling Riso internally.
- Projection – Releasing Riso outside the body for external effects.
- Conversion – Transforming Riso into other forms of energy (Amplified Projection).
- Infusion – Imbuing Riso into objects to enhance or alter their properties (Projected Amplification).
These applications range in complexity, with techniques categorized by a star-rating system:
- ☆☆☆☆☆ – Innate ability; instinctive once awakened.
- ★☆☆☆☆ – Fundamental technique; accessible with little to no training.
- ★★☆☆☆ – Basic technique; requires minimal effort to grasp.
- ★★★☆☆ – Intermediate technique; demands training and refinement.
- ★★★★☆ – Advanced technique; requires dedicated practice.
- ★★★★★ – Mastery-level technique; necessitates deep understanding and control.
Amplification Techniques
Amplification techniques focus on reinforcing the user’s physical and mental attributes by circulating Riso internally.
- Restriction (☆☆☆☆☆) – The concept of restrictions, such as basic restriction, the naming system, and the double-down rules are special applications of amplification that amplifies a user's Riso output via those handicaps.
- Great Impact (★☆☆☆☆) – Channels Riso into a specific body part to enhance strength (e.g., stronger punches, powerful kicks, headbutts).
- Great Temple (★☆☆☆☆) – Increases the durability of a chosen body part, granting extreme resistance to damage.
- Mind’s Eye (★★☆☆☆) – Accelerates cognitive processing, making time appear to slow down for heightened perception and battle awareness.
- Great Reflex (★★☆☆☆) – Boosts reaction speed and muscle memory, allowing near-instantaneous reflexes.
- Keen Sense (★★☆☆☆) – Enhances all five senses, improving tracking, awareness, and perception.
- Purifier (★★★☆☆) – Strengthens the immune system, granting resistance to toxins, poisons, and diseases.
- Cleansed Self (★★★★☆) – Slows aging by rejuvenating the body, sometimes extending lifespan.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Projection Techniques
Projection techniques revolve around emitting Riso externally, materializing it into pure energy.
- Release (☆☆☆☆☆) – Allows Riso to flow outward, forming an aura around the user.
- Shape (☆☆☆☆☆) – Enables the user to manipulate the form of released Riso.
- Great Coat (★☆☆☆☆) – Coats objects or body parts in a thin layer of Riso, acting as a buoyant protective armor.
- Great Force (★★★☆☆) – Channels Riso outward as a directed force, capable of launching powerful energy attacks.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Conversion Techniques
Conversion techniques focus on transforming Riso into different forms of energy with distinct properties and effects.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Infusion Techniques
Infusion techniques involve channeling Riso into external objects, binding it to their structure and enhancing their capabilities.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
2. Advanced Applications
Advanced applications are specialized extensions of the four basic applications. While anyone with Riso can learn them, they require greater skill, discipline, and understanding. These applications allow users to push Riso to new limits, making them highly valuable in combat and practical use.
The three recognized Advanced Applications are:
- Manifestation – Creating constructs from Riso.
- Manipulation – Controlling external forces, objects, or even living beings.
- Transformation – Altering the properties, composition, or nature of things.
Manifestation Techniques
Manifestation techniques allow users to create constructs from Riso, shaping them into physical forms. Unlike Projection, which simply releases energy, or conversion which alters Riso, Manifestation solidifies and stabilizes Riso into tangible creations.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Manipulation Techniques
Manipulation techniques allow users to control external forces, objects, concepts, or even living beings by binding their Riso to external elements.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Transformation Techniques
Transformation techniques revolve around altering the properties, composition, or nature of things, including living beings and objects.
(Examples to be expanded upon.)
Extensions - Personalized Techniques
Extensions are the most unique and personal expressions of Riso, embodying a user’s passions, defining moments, and limitless potential. Basically, they are extensions of the self, shaped by the user’s soul, desires, and experiences.
Unlike basic or advanced applications, which follow universal principles of Riso, Personalized Techniques emerge naturally as users refine their abilities, experiment with different applications, or experience profound awakenings. They are often instinctive to develop, and range from requiring little conscious effort to maintain to direct focus.
The Nature of Extensions
Extensions exist at the crossroads of instinct and mastery. They are shaped by the user’s natural affinity for certain applications of Riso, but they also extend beyond their foundational limits.
- Some abilities passively reshape how a person interacts with Riso itself (e.g., absorbing ambient energy, maintaining an unnatural state of awareness).
- Others allow for unconventional uses of standard applications (e.g., converting Riso into illusions, creating an unbreakable connection between two objects).
- Some techniques blur the line between physical and metaphysical, granting abilities that seem almost supernatural, like existing in two places at once or warping probability in subtle ways.
Each ability is deeply personal, meaning no two Personalized Techniques are exactly alike—except in cases where they are intentionally inherited or copied.
Once a Personalized Technique is awakened, it remains with the user permanently. However, these techniques can evolve, shifting in response to the user’s growth, emotions, and experiences.
