I’m a writer, I have a bunch of questions about German police from that aspect

Question

Hi all, I’m writing a story set in Germany (somewhere undisclosed in Bavaria, I’ll probably just make a fictional city) where the main character is this optimistic kid with a very naive worldview of good and bad, so his goal is to become a cop because he believes he can do a better job protecting the weak than the cops who failed his family when he was young, yadda yadda, that kind of deal.

I don’t really know how to research this, and my only point of reference is American police (I’m not American it’s just the only thing I constantly see in pop culture lol) and I don’t want to just draw from that. Before you ask, no, the setting can’t be changed from Germany 😭 im stubbornly set on that aspect.

Aside from my questions I’d also love recommendations for good tv shows/movies that accurately portray German police. Also this is a little silly but since there’s such a huge abundance of excellent Nordic crime dramas, will watching them give me a good idea of what it’s like in Germany too or is the cultural difference too large to draw inspiration from?

Anyway here are the main questions I have, might come up with more later

  1. If you graduate school at 17 (so like year 11 or 12) can you immediately start training?
  2. What does training look like? Are police academies like colleges where you move on site into a dorm? When I picture what that looks like I kinda imagine the beginning of the movie The Departed.
  3. How harsh are the requirements for mental stability? The main character isn’t too fucked up, he just went through some childhood trauma and got into fights as a kid but nothing severe. He’s like a softcore delinquent I guess.
  4. Do you start doing something like an internship at an actual police department at some point during training period or do you only join one after you’re graduated? If you do, what does a typical work day look like? Or in general what does a typical workday for a rookie look like.
  5. Can you choose a sort of path to “specialize” in? Like one of his friends wants to do more undercover detective stuff, but the main character sees himself responding to active situations and catching the criminal/rescuing innocents.
  6. What are the equivalent ranks for sheriff, sheriff assistant, deputy, detective, etc, in a city’s individual department? Again I only really have American stuff to reference off.
  7. What does a PD look like in a city the size of say Nuremberg? Both physically and personnel structure wise.
  8. Is there an organization that’s sort of the equivalent of someone going “I’ll work hard to one day become a badass James Bond style field agent”? I thought maybe GSG9 but idk.
  9. Do forensic scientists and crime scene experts work in the same building as cops and alongside them or at another site? Like if the case lead called for a meeting, would only cops/detectives be present or the other teams too.

That’s all for now, thanks a lot in advance I greatly appreciate any help
