Sensory overload with kids

Questions/Advice

Sensory overload (specifically noise) is something that I see alot of people asking about when it comes to kids. I know there have been multiple posts, and as someone who has had severe ADHD for most of their life, I wanted to share some info about it.

First about me, I am 40 and have been diagnosed with severe ADHD for 30 years now. I have been on stimulants of all and any kind during this time period before finding vyvanse. I've taken vyvanse since the day it hit the market over 20 years ago. Every year my ADHD gets worse and the sensory overload becomes more of a struggle. I am introverted to the point of almost complete solitude. I have social anxiety and cannot be around people that I do not know for more than an hour or two. Even my family is part of this at times when I am mentally past my breaking point. I wear earbuds to cancel noise anytime I am in public because of the noise. I primarily listen to metal music (this is an important point) at high volumes. I have two kids, a 10 year old and a 14 year old. They both have ADHD. My 14 year old has been medicated since he was 9. My husband is NOT ADHD, but has learned about what my mental struggles entail, and how to help me through the low points. We attend therapy together to better our communication together and how to raise our ADHD kids the best we can.

And here is the thing: you learn how to adjust to your kids noise and quirks and sensory. Other people kids yelling - mind numbing, pushing me to sensory overload and breakdown. However, it actually isn't as bad as you think with your own kids. There are days when you are at a breaking point, and that is why a good relationship with your partner is important. You can "tag in" the other person, so you get relief. But you learn how to adjust and pivot with noise your brain is used to. Same thing with loud music or other types of sensory. If you want kids, you find a way to make it work. It's hard, but It's worth it. It's worth all of it.
