My narcissistic ex is accusing me of being narcissistic. What’s going on?
After months of emotional abuse from my ex, during which I struggled to understand what was happening in our relationship, I finally realized I was dating a narcissist.
There were constant insults, belittling comments, and punishments for even the smallest mistakes—blocking me everywhere, followed by waves of love bombing, sweet promises, and idealization. He projected his own behavior onto me, punishing me for things he did regularly, refusing to take accountability, and always making me feel guilty. Somehow, everything was always my fault.
A while ago, I was going through a really stressful period at work. I barely had time for anything, was completely exhausted, and didn’t respond to some of his joking messages. He got furious. He demanded that I change my behavior because he didn’t feel “appreciated,” threatening to leave if I didn’t. I explained that I was just overwhelmed and busy that week, but he didn’t want to hear it. Instead, he told me he didn’t want to know anything about me anymore and blocked me—everywhere.
This wasn’t the first time, but this time, I decided I was done for real. I didn’t chase after him like before or try to explain myself. When he eventually unblocked me (weeks later), I went no contact.
A few days ago, he tried reaching out again. Then, I came across a post he made on Reddit. At first, I thought he was asking for advice about narcissism because he had realized he had a problem. I was even considering responding and offering support if he wanted to work on himself.
Then I read the comments… and realized he was talking about me! He accused me of manipulation, emotional abuse, and invalidating his feelings. He even claimed I had NPD and listed a bunch of other things.
I feel like I’m losing my mind.
Does he actually believe what he’s saying, or is this just another manipulation tactic? How does ignoring a few messages while tolerating months of verbal and emotional abuse suddenly make me the narcissist? Is this just another way to shift the blame? And why would he do it, many weeks after breaking up with me?
