Old Friendships: Are They Holding You Back?
Daily Dose Of Integrity
If you're not finding someone who's, as I say, "facing north"—someone who’s facing the same direction as you, working on themselves in a similar way, or at least supportive and encouraging of that kind of work—you’re going to grow apart from them.
This will eventually create friction.
As an extroverted nice guy, I used to have a lot of people I called friends, but I wasn’t deeply connected to any of them. Very few would have gotten up at 3 in the morning to come rescue me from a drama or something like that.
They weren’t real friends. They were just people I thought of as friends.
Looking at my current self, I’m only in contact with about 5 percent of them. The rest have faded out of my life.
It’s not because they’re bad people, or because I was surrounded by narcissists like some people might assume.
It’s just that as I changed, they didn’t, and in that process, I realized I had been surrounding myself with people who matched my lower psychological health level.
