XG and Beto's finishing in the last few matches

Team Talk

Strikers are always judged by scoring goals, but nowadays we have a better understanding that only looking at goals scored doesn't tell the whole story. Looking at underlying stats like xG and PSxG can give us a better indication of how a player is actually performing.

Beto has missed a few solid chances recently, but before that he was absolutely clinical. What gives? A deeper dive into the xG data shows that his performance hasn't actually changed. The table below has a few recent Beto scoring chances.

MatchxGPSxGGoal?
Wolves, 13'.54.62No
Brentford, 42'.38.77No
Brentford, 88'.31.71No
Palace, 42.19.49Yes
Man U, 19'.25.23Yes
Shite, 11'.52.36Yes
Leicester, 6'.24.69Yes
Leicester, 45'.40.26Yes

Basically, during his scoring spree, Beto's finishing wasn't actually better than in the last few games. A few shots that were less likely to go in went in, while the last few games have seen good strikes stopped by good goalkeeping. Overall, Moyes has him running onto through balls like the second coming of Jelavic and his performances in front of goal have still been good even if he hasn't scored in TWO whole games.
