How to time a new position 4 months out?

I’d like to slide into a new career around the end of July/ start of August, but I doubt someone would hire me now and then be willing to wait ‘til then. Do I just wait to apply for jobs in May-June, or are processes long enough that I should be applying now?

I’m also considering a reading/math tutor self employment deal (I only want to make 12-18k a year)so if anyone has gone that route I’d love tips.
