Every election season, we see the same pattern—celebrities running for public office, banking on their fame rather than their qualifications. While some may have good intentions, the reality is that name recognition alone doesn’t make a good legislator.

Here’s why Filipinos should think twice before voting for actors, singers, and TV personalities into Congress:

1. Lack of Legislative Expertise – Crafting laws requires knowledge of governance, economics, and legal frameworks. Most showbiz personalities have no background in these areas, making them ineffective lawmakers.

2. Popularity ≠ Competence – Just because someone is famous doesn’t mean they understand the complexities of running a country. We need leaders with concrete platforms, not just catchy campaign jingles and fanbase-driven votes.

3. Track Record of Poor Performance – History has shown that many celebrity legislators contribute little to policy-making, with some being absent from crucial sessions or failing to pass meaningful laws. Their presence in Congress often becomes symbolic rather than impactful.

4. Overshadowing More Qualified Candidates – Many competent but lesser-known candidates struggle to win because Filipinos tend to vote based on name recall rather than credentials. This results in lost opportunities for real public servants to create change.

5. Politics Becomes a Side Job – Some celebrities treat public office as a fallback career when their entertainment careers slow down. Governance should never be a backup plan—it requires full commitment and dedication.

Instead of being swayed by a familiar face, let’s scrutinize candidates based on their plans, experience, and track record. The future of our country is at stake. We deserve better.

What are your thoughts? Have we learned from past mistakes, or are we doomed to repeat them?
