About a week ago I went to turn on the oven to cook my stepdaughter a frozen pizza.

Now let me preface this with I wasn’t raised in a household that stored things I’m the oven, but I fully recognize that other people do that. Usually though it’s cookware that’s stored not cooked food or plastic or any kind.

Moving on. After the oven has finished preheating, I noticed the kitchen was smoky and smelled like burning plastic. I opened the over and saw my roommates glass pan and the plastic lid melted into it with the brownies she baked a few days prior. (Pic attached for reference). I sent a picture to our roommate group chat to which she responded “Oh no! My brownies. I’m assuming you didn’t check the oven first?”, I responded with, “ no, why would I assume I need to check the oven first?”. Mind you she has never stored anything in the oven especially not cooked food the entire 2 years we’ve been here.

The next day she texted me asking if I was gonna clean the oven and I said no, but I had the stuff to clean it. She proceeded to get pissed off about me not taking accountability for turning the oven on and not checking it. Which again, me not being raised in a household that stores things on the oven, and two her never storing anything in the oven prior to this day AND also not letting anyone know that she put her cook brownies in there for storage. I accepted responsibility for turning the oven on and even apologize ruining her pan, but beyond that it was her fault for putting them there and expecting that we would know to check the oven without knowing they were there. She also posted about this in her socials leaving out the part she played in this situation making me look worse and her look like she’s not the bad guy.

I should add that my roommate is a toxic person who does not like to take accountability for anything she does wrong and hates being called out when she is in the wrong. The conversation got blown out of proportion (screenshots attached too) and resulted in me moving out back to my mom’s for the sake of my mental health.

So I end this with AITA for refusing to clean the oven?

AITA for refusing to clean the oven after I turned it on and subsequently ruined my roommates pan/brownies?
