The Awakening

Poem

I entered the world, a fragile spark of life,

yet to be shaped by the world around me.

My brain grew within my squirming form,

greedily consuming all it was fed-

both helpful and harmful,

too young to know the difference,

too immature to discern good from poison,

digesting it all.

Each image, each word,

each praise, each rant,

each hug, each slap,

loving gazes, hate-filled eyes,

lonely rooms, family times-

all became me.

I am the caterpillar who spun a chrysalis

from threads of both love and doubt.

Enfolded within a murky cocoon,

I reformed.

Inside, I chose what to become-

Flying pest, or creature of light.

Emerging on a new dawn,

I spread trembling wings

that beat a defiant rhythm

against the darkness of my world,

determined to remind others

of life’s beautiful colors,

of escaping the spaces that trap us,

of choosing to share light.

I took flight!

Watch me dance!

Watch me dodge the poison of the past

and wake others!

Watch our strength unite

in a kaleidoscope of light.
