Advice for Allies
Hey everybody, so a close family member of mine recently came out to me as trans (mtf). We're both 19-20, and I know that I'm the first person she's come out to. The reason for this was that I am very vocal about views that the rest of our family avoids at best and despises at worst. So, I feel confident about how I handled her initial coming out--be open, make sure it's an "I love you because" not "I love you even though," use her pronouns and new name in private whenever possible, make sure she knows that I would much rather support her than continue to be in contact with any and all transphobic family members, make super secret spy plans to tell everyone we're going hiking but actually go to the mall and try on clothes and get makeup and everything, etc etc. My question is do any of you have any advice for me in helping her as we go forward, things that you wish people around you had done? With helping her explore and figure herself out, eventually helping her come out to more people, whatever. I just want to make sure that I'm not accidentally doing something that might hurt her in ways I wouldn't know, or not doing things I could be that would help. Thanks!
