Worried my tattoos will show after surgery

I'm not on a waiting list yet, but I'm trying to be. I'm not as concerned with the surgery risks as I am my scars and tattoos. Should I get laser tattoo removal? I don’t want them to show, but I'm worried the excess ink will look worse than the tattoos themselves
