DAE struggle to study from “normal” uni textbooks?
I’ve always struggled with studying from typical university textbooks – the kind with dense blocks of text and minimal visual structure. Even if I understand the content, my brain quickly loses focus or gets overwhelmed. I find myself constantly asking "why is this so?", trying to visualize, restructure, and break everything down manually, which is exhausting and slows me down a lot.
What does work for me is content that has clear headings, bolded keywords, definitions in boxes, real-world examples, visual separation between concepts, and consistent formatting. That kind of layout helps me stay focused and digest information so much better.
I also tend to analyze not just the text but also the layout, formatting, and whether it “makes sense” visually – if it doesn’t, it throws me off. Because of that, I barely manage to finish normal academic books, even if the topic itself fascinates me.
Does anyone else feel this way? Is this a neurodivergent thing (e.g. ADHD, autism, AuDHD)? Or just a personal preference? I’m curious to hear if others experience something similar and what helped them.
