Vet tested for FeLV, incorrectly told us our kittens were negative
My partner and I rescued two kittens back in July 2024. They were immediately taken to the vet and tested for FeLV along with all of the usual kitten appointment things. We were told they were negative for FeLV and healthy kittens and they were both then vaccinated for FeLV.
Fast forward to this week, and one of our kittens starts to breathe quick and cough some. We take him the vet and they do an x ray and some tests. They advise us to take him straight to the ER and they do more tests there, were we find he has T cell lymphoma and fluid in his belly/lungs. He has a mass in his chest. At just 10months old. They perform another test there at the ER and he is positive for FeLV. Cancer is everywhere and we said goodbye that day.
We find out our local vet sent an email to the hospital saying that they found out he was FeLV positive in July and there is “no record of any discussion with patient or follow up test”. We had no clue that he was positive and now are extremely concerned for his sister who may be FeLV positive as well. We were completely in shock.
Obviously, knowing would not have changed anything, but it would have been helpful as we could have accidentally exposed other cats unknowingly and we could have known and prepared for what happened yesterday.
Is it fair to ask for a reimbursement as they had us vaccinate the kittens for something that they were already positive for and had the results for? Is it fair to be upset that they had a positive test and never communicated it?
Thanks for listening 🖤
