Eureka Owners: Is your grinder jamming up and not grinding from time to time?

Equipment Discussion

My Specialita started to jam up several weeks ago. I would activate the grinder, hear a buzzing noise from the motor but the burr would not spin. This required that I coarsen up the grind and try again. Sometimes the grinder would start on first activation but hesitate ever so slightly as it got going. Well, it took some time but I've figured it out: The electrical capacitor at the motor was defective and cannot provide the burst of torque required to start grinding.

This capacitor will fit a US fit Eureka Mignon Specialita grinder with the below modifications:

This has two leads on each side, for a total of four leads. The OEM capacitor has only one lead per side. Since the grinder requires only one lead on each side, you'll have to take electric tape and insulate the redundant leads. The above is the closest I could get to the OEM specs and more importantly, size.

The OEM capacitor is slightly slimmer and longer. However, the above model is a good replacement. Both the OEM and Amazon replacement capacitors require bending the leads at a 45 degree angle with needle nose pliers so that the capacitor wiring clears the case when reassembling.

  1. Turn grinder upside down.

  2. Open case.

  3. Snip zip tie holding capacitor.

  4. Carefully pry off the connectors with needle nose pliers.

  5. Do not touch or cross leads on the defective and still very much charged capacitor. Set aside where no one can touch the leads. My understanding is that over the course of several days the capacitor will discharge and will be safe to handle, but I am not clear on this.

  6. Tread new zip tie over, under and over through the case holes.

  7. Cinch tight, reconnect and reassemble.

  8. Grind finer!
