Regarding Windows 9x, AMD AM2, and PCIe graphics.
I'll try to not make this too complicated:
- nVidia nForce chipsets are very unreliable and buggy, so Socket 939 and most of AM2 is out of the window, so either Socket 754 or certain AM2 boards would be good. If I'm deadset on 9x I would have to use a single-core AM2 chip. Which I'm fine with! I found a board that has drivers even for 9x regarding it's chipset. I don't know if what I'm doing is a bad idea. I've been told to go to Intel for a safer bet but I really want AMD, and would like to know what to look out for, tips, all that.
- Issue for me is if I go AM2 with a compatible 9x motherboard is graphics for 9x, in regards to PCIE. I know of GeForce PCX and the GeForce 6000 series but I don't think AMD released anything PCIe with 9x drivers. Unless I'm mistaken and have been lied to, their earliest drivers for their X-#### cards were XP. Latest cards for 9x were the 9800 XT and the likes.
- I could get an AGP AM2 board which are relatively rare but exist, but I want a PCIe one because a GeForce 6800 or PCX 5700 would be easier to obtain (or equally hard in the case of the PCX thing) than their AGP brethren.
- Also, GeForce PCX, I've never heard of these cards before? Are they as bad as FX? Are they even worse because they use PCIe?
I'm asking all this because I got an absolutely baller Chieftec Dragon case and want to treat it to something not-super-sacrilegious by making an uber-overkill 9x, XP, and Linux machine. It came with a Tux sticker on it, which is why Linux.
