Can my company dock my pay as a salaried employee?
I was supposed to go to a job site for work this week. I was supposed to fly out yesterday night, work Tuesday Wednesday and half of Thursday before flying home. I ended up not going because of a whole mess of issues I raised with my management team, and I accidentally canceled my flight amongst the havoc. I checked on the website last night to verify if the company would get refunded for a cancelation and yes they would, but when I checked the next morning I didn’t see a dollar amount and hit continue which canceled it. I offered to drive out there for my mistake, and they declined and said they’ll figure it out. And when I canceled, I didn’t have an official approval to stay home or to get on the plane and head to the job site.
Then today, the owner of the company calls me pissed and screaming his head off at me. I’ll spare you the details, but basically he said “you got your wish, I’m calling our payroll guy and telling him to dock you two weeks of pay. You’re not allowed to work until that’s over and we’ll be writing you up.”
I clearly messed up by canceling the flight without an official answer as to whether to stay home or fly out to the job site, but I offered a remedy. Now, because I’m not there for two and a half days of work, I am being docked two weeks of pay. However, I’m a salaried employee, so how does this work? Is this even legal? I’m just not sure what to do. Thank you in advance.
Location: New Mexico but the company is based in Colorado if that matters and there is no local office; fully remote work
