Some general observations about who is taking the DRP and who is risking the RIF

Based on ONLY personal observations, asking around, and reading posts here, and doing research on the pros and cons of each situation.

It seems to me that those who are taking the DRP are:

  • young (under 25) and just starting their career, and can afford (time-wise) to pivot into the private sector or some industry that isn't affected. The 4-5 months' worth of free salary is also attractive if they are at a lower GS level.
  • probationary, and don't have the seniority/standing to survive a RIF if it were to proceed properly by seniority
  • single, and therefore don't have a second income or source of health insurance to fall back on if they are RIF'd and need some time to make the transition to a new job
  • at or close to retirement age (55+ years old) and it's a good deal for them because they get to retire a little early and still get full salary and benefits

Those on my team who have not taken the DRP and are taking their chances with the RIF include someone who's in the National Guard and basically has a second part-time job, and those who have 10+ years of federal experience, are partnered, or otherwise relatively financially secure.
