Conservatorship/fiduciary for schizophrenic boyfriend? - North Carolina
Location: NC, USA
Hey everyone, first time posting here so if I'm in the wrong place please let me know.
This is a long and complicated situation so I'll make it as simple And straightforward as possible.
My (38F) long term bf (34M) is diagnosed with schizophrenia and is not medicated. Over the course of the past few months his symptoms have been increasing in severity and for the first time since I've known him his illness is causing some major disruptions in his life, the most notable in his susceptibility to manipulation and scams.
Twice in the past month he has been scammed for large sums of money. He recently suggested I assume responsibility as his fiduciary, but I'm not really sure how this would work because we are not married. I also mentioned the possibility of a conservatorship but I don't want to restrict his ability to make decisions about his life, I believe he and I are in agreement that he only wants help managing his finances so he's not able to send money without a second opinion.
How does this work? What is the legal process for being assigned as someone's financial fiduciary, can it be done without a conservatorship? How is this type of situation commonly handled? Is this something that I can have filed with the court like a trust, or is this a separate type of assignment that has to be deemed necessary by a legal entity or court assignment/appointment?
Thank you in advance for any and all advice the situation is incredibly overwhelming I just want to do what's best for him.
