Struggling to deal

Rant

I’ve been a EA at a union for a almost a year and a half. This is my first time doing this type of work and it’s been a tumultuous time. For the entirety of my first year I was absolutely convinced I was horrible at my job. I felt like I was in over my head and would regularly worry I was letting things spin out of control

Fast forward to a coworker who previously had my position leaving at the end of my first year. The blindfold came off and it was made clear to me that my executive is actually the one not doing particularly good at her job. In fact, it’s to the point where the staff now comments to me how incompetent she is.

Honestly, the worst part is now I can see it. My work gets bogged down because she doesn’t do the thing she needs and instead focuses on more frivolous things. She micromanages people when she should be doing her work and often times passes HER work onto others. Often times that person is me. Which honestly is even worse because it seems like she doesn’t take me seriously. I’ll bring issues to her attention and she just brushes them off.Eventually time will have passed and our timeline will be delayed and it’s only then that she’ll actually listen to me. The work that I do is related to what should be her main priority, but often times it’s felt like all the stuff she adds to her plate in more important. Of course, I can’t say anything because that’s my boss, and she also fired the previous assistant before me. That’s not to mention my other coworker who she’s frequently berated and has threatened to fire multiple times.

The coworker who gets berated has been here 30+ years and has said this is genuinely the worst administration she’s ever seen. The worst part is I can’t even really be seen talking to my coworkers because I’ve been told she’ll start to see me as a threat. I genuinely don’t know how to do this anymore. My work feels pointless because when I schedule things something more important always comes up or my concerns get ignored or I have to do parts of her job. She’s also hinted several times that she wants me to hover around her to make her do work. I know full well though that’d she’d likely yell at me if even I tried that. Although I should say I don’t think I should have to hunt for my boss around the building because she’s chatting.

I don’t even know if I make enough to keep doing this honestly. All I know is I dread every single work day. It’s getting harder and harder to wake up every morning. I know I should be relieved the issue isn’t me, but knowing the whole office walks on eggshells around her almost makes it worse. I’m also apparently the 5th assistant she’s had within a three year period, which doesn’t seem right. I’m planning to get out soon, but with the job market the way it is I don’t know how long that’ll take. Am I crazy for feeling this way though? My family seems to think I’m making a big deal out of nothing. Please tell me if I am. Does anybody have any advice to just survive for the time being? Anything would help at this moment.
