Confused

Ending a 10-year relationship—especially one I chose to walk away from—should feel liberating, right? And in some ways, it does. But the aftermath is far more disorienting than I expected. Is “confusing” the right word? Maybe. Or maybe it’s more like being a small fish suddenly thrown into an endless ocean, left to navigate currents I never even noticed before.

It’s strange, the little things that trip me up—parking, driving, grocery shopping. Tasks that seemed insignificant before now feel oddly daunting. Turns out, he wasn’t as useless as I sometimes let myself believe. For a decade, without realizing it, I leaned on him. And now, that weight falls entirely on me.

But with every challenge I conquer, there’s a quiet satisfaction. A sense of freedom. Proof that I can do this. Then I come home. The house is quiet. Too quiet. Especially when the kids are at school. And that’s when the thoughts creep in—the ones I try to push away.

Isn’t this what you wanted?

And yet, as I walk down the hall and glance into the room he once occupied—now claimed by my eldest—I feel an ache I can’t quite name. Did I make the right choice?

Is separation always this confusing, or is it just me?
