EDH Horde Magic Revision Thoughts
Long time ago my wife and I wanted to play some magic but didn't feel like 1v1 commander. So I looked up some other playstyles and found this. "Horde Magic"
Tl;Dr it's a PvE group format where the players go against a horde deck made up of 60 tokens and 30 non token, non target specific, non X spells. The horde acts on its own at random with its own life total. Any decisions it has to make are made at random to the best of its ability.
Players share a life total and have 3 turns to set up defenses before the horde activates by revealing cards from the top till it hits a non token card.
All tokens hit the field and the non token is cast. The horde deck has infinite mana at all times and casts from hand and graveyard if able while all tokens are goaded with haste. The horde deck has no life total and instead mills equal to damage taken.
I'm trying to think of a way to fit it better into commander by adding a horde commander or BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy)/villain to lead the deck with tweaks to life and making the commanders more like survivors and main characters like a Left for Dead cast or something.
Initial ideas were something with counters like commanders start on the battlefield with 20 "survival counters" on them that act like loyalty and are removed when damaged and added with lifegain spells. The horde deck commander would have the same mechanic.
Trying to find a way to work around infinite combos as those just kinda make this sort of thing feel worthless in a way but not wanting to just say they don't work either.
Hope this inspires some people and also hope to get some good brainstorming in on this. What are some other ideas you can think of to spruce this game mode up a bit?
